The role

As a Characterisation Technician, you will support the preparation, testing, and analysis of material samples while ensuring high standards of quality, accuracy, and laboratory safety. Working closely with technical and production teams, you will contribute to testing programmes, quality activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key responsibilities:

• Prepare and organise material samples for testing and analysis
• Carry out routine materials testing and characterisation activities
• Operate and maintain laboratory and testing equipment
• Record, review, and assist with the interpretation of test results
• Support quality control activities and process improvement initiatives
• Identify and report equipment, method, or testing issues
• Assist with technical documentation and reporting
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organised laboratory environment

What we're looking for:

• Experience within a laboratory, materials testing, quality control, or metallurgical environment
• Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach
• Experience handling and preparing samples for analysis
• Ability to accurately record and interpret data
• Good understanding of laboratory health and safety practices
• Strong communication and organisational skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word
• A proactive, hands-on attitude and willingness to support a growing business

Desirable experience:

• Materials Science or related scientific qualification
• Experience with metallic sample preparation, including cutting, grinding, and polishing
• Knowledge of materials characterisation techniques
• Experience using optical or electron microscopy equipment
• Experience within advanced manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, battery, pharmaceutical, or process industries

Location

Primarily based at the company's Birmingham site in Tyseley, with occasional travel to a second Birmingham location as required. Candidates should be flexible and comfortable working across both sites depending on operational and project requirements.
